Whatever mother nature throws your way in the winter months, you’ve got to find a way to work with it. With spring races looming in the future, the winter training months are critical. Myself and five other bloggers have compiled our best tips to keep you running through the cold.
What you wear matters
Probably the most essential piece of winter running is what you wear. Here are my winter running essentials that I use day in and out during the cold months.
Athleta 2 in 1 Capri/Tight and Skirt
For especially cold runs I wear a 2 in 1 capri/skirt that I got from Athleta a while ago. For temps in the single digits or below zero I layer another pair of tights over them. The skirt does a great job of keeping my bum warm (now one likes a frozen ass) and the extra tights layer keeps my quads and legs toasty as well. If you don’t need to layer tights, then Athleta also has a great tight/skirt combo with their thicker winter fabric that’s currently on SALE! You can check that out HERE.
I’ve had my Saucony convertible mittens for a while now and they are my go-to gloves on a cold day. I love the way they convert from a glove to a mitten if necessary. They also have a snot wipe spot and a place to clip a small light. I found mine at TJMaxx, but you can find a similar mitten HERE.
Warm socks are a must and in the winter I usually go from a low-cut no shoe sock to one that covers my ankles. Smartwool has a great variety of merino wool socks that are ideal for keeping feet toasty. They are the only socks I’ve worn that keeps my toes warm from start to finish. You can find a full selection of their socks HERE.
Dr. Cool T-Shirt and Long Sleeve.
When the weather requires more than one layers, it is important that those layers are breathable and wicking. If you’re layers aren’t breathable you can wind up much, much colder than planned because you’ll be wet. And wet and cold is no fun. I love layering with Dr. Cool t-shirts and my Dr. Cool Long Sleeve. Because the cooling technology of the fabric is ideal for keeping you dry (and therefor warm) on your run. You can find the long-sleeve HERE. Use code sarah20 to get 20% off your order.
