Under Armour Mountain Running Series: Killington Preview

August 18, 2021 • 3 Comments

This weekend I’ll be heading to Killington, Vermont for the second race in the Under Armour Mountain Running Series. I’m excited to sneak away for this race on my own (sans kiddos). I’ll be racing the Vertical Challenge on Saturday and then the 10K on Sunday.

Even though the mountain races I’ve run have had plenty of vertical this will be my first uphill only challenge. The course is only 1.25 miles, but gains 1507 ft. It’s not too different from running up Gunstock Mountain, which is just shy of 1.5 miles and 1200ft in elevation gain.

My goals going into the vertical challenge are to be tenacious and relentless and hopefully be as efficient as possible as I switch between running and power hiking.

On Sunday, I’ll tackle the 10K course, which is similar in distance to most of the mountain races I’ve done this year (Sleepy Hollow, Cranmore and Loon). I’m excited to see what this course has to offer in terms of incline. Cranmore and Loon boast inclines upwards of 40%, so I know I’m well prepared for whatever the “Beast of the East” has to offer.

Will you be at Killington this weekend? Have you ever done a vertical challenge race?

Thanks to Under Armour for providing my race entry and outfitting me with some great gear!

-Sarah

That elevation is crazy!! And I can’t imagine doing that one day and then following it up with a 12K. My legs would be cashed. Good luck!!

I used to hate and be afraid of elevation, but not anymore since my last vacation. My husband and I visited his native country of beautiful Switzerland and had he took me to the Swiss Alps. It was the most extensive mountain range system I ever saw, it lies over the entire Europe. It was cool, so I agree you have to switch between running and power hiking. That strategy works.
