When the going gets tough, the tough get self-talking. It’s true. Being on top of your mental game is just as important as preparing physically for a race. And we all need a little positive self-talk to get us through the toughest miles.
Powerful Words
I’ve used mantras over and over again in races and they have helped me to some of my best performances. They are also extremely powerful outside of the running world, in our day to day lives. Repeating truths to ourselves can alter our internal narrative and change the way we think about ourselves and they way we perceive the world.

Keep it even. Even….even…
LOVE this!! Great mantras….every single one of them! My favorite right now is “quick feet”, I have been using that a lot to focus on keeping my form together 🙂
These are cool, but I must admit that sometimes I have to talk myself through the miles especially once I hit 10. I ask myself why am I doing this again followed by “only 3 more miles to go.” The half marathon has become my favorite race even though there are times that I wonder why I keep going back for me.
I always whisper to myself, “you’ve got this…you’ve got this.” I also envision someone really important (like my husband, father, etc.) waiting for me at the finish line. Mantras are critical for those challenging times!
These are great! Thank you Sarah!!
I love mantras! I usually use “I can do this, one foot in front of the other”.
You know I love mantras and positive self-talk. The mantras I use the most in a race are …
1. You are stronger than you think
2. Breathe in strength. Breathe out weakness.
3. I get to choose the outcome of this race.
Lately during tough speed workouts I’ve also been using “what doesn’t challenge me doesn’t change me.” xo
Love all of these! I like to tell myself - “Don’t leave anything out on the road” “You’ve worked so hard for this - no regrets”
